The following information is about Mast Cells.
Mast Cells Defined
These are a group of cells that line the capillaries of tissues that come in contact with the outside, like skin, sinuses, and lung mucosa. They, like their first cousin basophils, are produced in the red bone marrow and migrate to the appropriate tissues, where they stay. They bind IgE, supply the histamine and heparin response that gives you a healing inflammation, and cause allergies.

- Mast cells express a peripheral cannabinoid recept...[Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 1995] - PubMed Result: Mast cells express CB2 receptors. Palmitoylethan olamine (found in peripheral tissues) binds to the CB2R and downregulates mast cell activation. This was antagonized by anandamide.
- Receptor-indep endent effects of natural cannabinoi...[ Biochim Biophys Acta. 2001] - PubMed Result: Endocannabinoi ds and analogues did neither induce histamine secretion, nor prime secretion induced by compound 48/80 (0.2 microg/ml). Delta(9)-THC and Delta(8)-THC induced in vitro histamine secretion from RPMC through CB receptor-indep endent interactions, partly involving G(i/o) protein activation.
- The cannabinoid CB2 receptor selective agonist reduces mast cell induced oedema: the CB(2) receptor selective agonist AM1241 diminishes oedema produced as a result of mast cell degranulation in vivo
- Synergistic action of estradiol and myelin basic protein on mast cell secretion and brain myelin changes resembling early stages of demyelination: Intracranial mast cells increase the permeability of the blood brain barrier as well as proteolytic enzymes that degrade myelin. Multiple sclerosis is a human demyelinating disease of unknown etiology, with a high prevalence in women which results in penetration of blood-borne immune cells within the brain parenchyma and subsequent destruction of myelin. Here they show that estradiol increase mast cell secretion as well as demyelination.
- Progesterone triggers selective mast cell secretion of 5-HT: Progesterone stimulated the release of serotonin by mast cells but did not stimulate release of histamine.
- Differential release of serotonin without comparable histamine under diverse conditions in the rat mast cell: Mast cells release both serotonin and histamine. Mast cells that were stimulated to release serotonin did not release it via the classic exocytitic pathway, as visualized by light microscopy. This suggests an unknown mechanism for serotonin release from mast cells. Histamine is released from mast cells via exocytosis, suggesting a differential mechanism for histamine vs serotonin release.
